Typing speed...

So I took a traditional typing class when I was in 8th grade...nothing special about it just standard technique...I was able to type at 50 wpm...If I did really well during a test I could hit 60wpm...which I think was like the standard speed that any good typist should be able to hit.
Well...I didn't really feel like I am that much faster now...So I went through a bunch of different online typing tests and was very surprised to find out that I am able to type at a consistent 90+ wpm...which is kind of a shock because I've also become more accurate too.
I think that I could actually type even faster if I could just type what is in my head instead of copying something too.
We are all probably pretty damn fast I would imagine.
Best score here...was pretty fun to do this test. This is the best one I found. This thing says I am in the 98th percentile...crazy like only 1.5% of people who took this test were faster than me.

Oh and then I have to verify I'm that fast again buy typing one of those crazy non-uniform prove you aren't a bot thing...somehow I typed it perfectly with 100% accuracy...best score yet I think...

Hmmm... Not so great... I think I could improve a bit using my own keyboard at home. I hate this one. Well, I guess a word per second isn't THAT bad. Just not ElTwoIcksor fast.
Code: Select all
Words per minute (WPM) 63
Keystrokes 326
Correct words 63
Wrong words 1
You reached 317 Points so you achieved position 12635 of 80276 on the ranking list (last 24 hours)

Slight Improvement. I guess I'm in the top 13% or so of people who've taken this test.
I'm ok with that. Still want to try it on my keyboard.
Code: Select all
Words per minute (WPM) 66
Keystrokes 332
Correct words 65
Wrong words 0
You reached 332 Points so you achieved position 10974 of 80215 on the ranking list (last 24 hours)

The keyboard definitely has a lot to do with how fast you can type. I tried a logitech keyboard that I had out and it pretty much sucked.
I think the two things that really matter is that the keys only have to go down so far in order to switch. The other thing is to have very low resistance.
Believe it or not this is the keyboard that I am using:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us ... yboard-600
It is actually not that bad. because the keys only have to go down so far to switch BUT there is a bit of resistance now. It is kind of old now and I have spilled some stuff on it.
I can actually feel how it is limiting me a bit now because of the keys not going down smoothly enough because of the spilled stuff.
Supposedly the one to get for top performance is this keyboard - The DAS keyboard.
Too clicky fore me though
http://www.daskeyboard.com/
The kind of keyboard that I think would suck lots of ass is something like this where you have to push the keys down too far.
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us ... /JWD-00046
I think that I am a fan of keyboards where the keys don't have to travel that far. It feels weird to type on a standard keyboard after getting used to the keyboard that I have because the keys don't have to travel that far down.
This is the kind of design that I think I would like the most because of how short the throw is...

Surprisingly another thing that I think is good is if your fingers can slip a little on the keys. I think that being able to slide a little bit is better than if your fingers have super good traction. If your fingers grip too good I think it kind of messes up the flow. I was actually screwing around by typing with my finger nails and that actually seemed to be pretty cool...but I've cut them now.
Hehe...

I have to try really hard to type in the 70-80wpm range...feels so slow now...funny. Typing at 70wpm is almost impossible.

I use the flat/thin Apple aluminum keyboards at home. Low resistance, low travel, separated keys. I can type quite quickly on those. The one I did those tests above on is a Dell OEM pile-o-trash.

Leisure typing speed is 80wpm
Attentive typing speed is 90wpm
To get to 100wpm I actually have to concentrate. (my neck gets stiff too)
Most of the time I have been scoring in the 90wpm range.
I think that I may have mild carpal tunnel in my left hand and something is going on with my right elbow. I have to wonder what typing fast does to your brain?
Damn blaznit!!!!

I was hauling ass in this test but because of the number of incorrect words it took my speed down. I got 108 correct words with two less keystrokes on this test but got four wrong words so I got penalized...damnit!

This isn't really a full test of typing speed either. Your real typing speed is how fast you can type something that you're typing, not reading and entering. This is a valid test for data-entry people, or typists. I can type significantly faster when I'm typing something straight from my head, and not reading from the screen.

You know what is really weird is that I thought EXACTLY the same thing about being able to type something faster from my head than copying something that is already written but it's not true...I can type a lot faster copying something than directly dictating something from my brain. No doubt in my mind. I'm more accurate as well. I would have never believed it before I started being able to type faster.
APPLE WIRELESS KEYBOARD!!!

So this registered user on the 10 fast fingers site has taken 160 tests and uses the Apple wireless keyboard and his average speed is 136wpm with a low of 120 and a high of 155...so me thinks the theory I had about the short key throw is definitely a realistic thing.
That keyboard is pretty cheap too compared to the DAS keyboard. I shall have to give that keyboard a whirl with the speed test next time I am over...over!

You should have to come over to give it a whirling soon! Tomorrow I'm going to attempt to fix my automobile though.
I really like these Apple-jobbies though. They're fast and easy to type on. Comfortable too. I like the sound they make too. (kinda laptop-y) Quiet, but enough sound to give you that feedback.
Interesting about dictation-location-directation...
Still improving...

It isn't coming natural for me though. In order for me to type that fast I have to really concentrate on what I am doing...I don't know if concentrating is going to continue to make me be able to type faster. I think I need to make it be more automatic. For me typing this fast is all about mental focus...my fingers will move really fast but it's all mental at this point.
And again...

582 keystrokes and 110 correct words at 112wpm...this is a better 112wpm than the one above.
When will I hit 113?!?!?
