Conquered teh 28ft triple jump today...

Post by Bill Drayton Jr. »

I jumped it three times. The first two came up short and the last was clean. The second time was actually the shortest. It is pretty fun going that far but it seriously takes all the speed I can get and I have to boost off the lip pretty hard to clear it. I have only ever seen two other riders do it and they are ridiculous. I wonder now that I am doing it if it will get others to try...

Here is the jump - one more time: (will have to get a new picture of me actually jumping it instead of just sitting there)

More triple conquests...

Jumped it many times today but only cleared it clean three times. Is rather difficult to do but eventually I should have it anytime I want it hopefully.

Raced again...had my first win of the season - won all three rounds. Things are really starting to come together now. Stuff is becoming automatic instead of thinking about what I am going to do it is done automatically. Definitely at a new level.

Had my second win against 6 other intermediates at a state championship race today that was pretty big. I screwed up a bunch of times but just slammed through it all. I just couldn't keep myself under control and I was just all over the place. I overestimated then overshot, underestimated and then tagged front wheel twice on the same fricken jump that I have never tagged on front wheel...uhg...then my timing got totally screwed up all over the rhythm and got pretty wild through there...it was a mess but I just powered through it all and won reasonably easy but it was embarrassing as I am much better rider than what I was when I was out there...Last Sunday I did WAY better than this time...dunno what happened...

My girlfriend raced today and yesterday! Yesterday she got 2nd against 3 other novice guys. But today she had to race 6 intermediate guys my age and her class was tougher than mine!!! It sucked for her basically and she went down in the second round and didn't make it to the main event. It was only her second race ever - I couldn't believe she had to race at such a high level for a second race. I would have probably gotten 2nd in her race as there was this ex-expert rider riding as an intermediate in there that would have probably beat me BUT he ended up going down in the main and finished last. What was kind of funny is before the race me and the ex-expert guy were talking and he was giving me advice about how not to go low in the turns where the dirt is all loose because you can wash out there really easy so I stayed high. He went low, washed out, and crashed...which is just what my girlfriend did. She hit her head HARD, had a little memory loss, and jammed her neck pretty good. Her helmet has some nice gashes on it now...so glad she had a full face... I freaked out when she went down... I didn't have time to get nervous today worrying about her so much... When she went down I crushed the gatorade bottle I had in my hand...ugh...what a day

BAD crash...Broken bone #12???

Post by Bill Drayton Jr. »

Honestly losing count now of bone breaks but I fractured a rib under my arm pit from coming down hard on my left side onto an obstacle at the track. Also have massive contusion on my left side complete with a lot of internal bleeding that went from my hip down to my leg after a couple days.

Raced last Friday and ended up going down when my front tire got sliced by the rear axle of someone I made contact with in a turn. The axle went through the sidewall of the tire and through the tube leaving a pretty big hole. I tumbled out of it unhurt but sucked to not be able to qualify for the main event. There were 22 riders all over 30...was quite ridiculous.

Last Sunday I ended up racing hurt - and getting last. I did it for points so I may actually be able to end up with a 2nd place in the state championship series of races. Basically you have to race three state championship races to qualify to race the final which is a month away.

Broken bones suck...especially when the weather is pretty much perfect right now...oh well...

Incredible! Rick, build me a bike out of spare parts and send it this way, quick! This makes me want to start riding again. Only this time around, I clearly need to break more bones. I live like two minutes away from three public skateparks that I could easily break bones on and have a blast doing it! Uhh ohh, I feel a phase coming on.

The Santa Monica skate park looks very nice – too bad I still haven’t ridden ANY skate park yet…what the hell! There is an indoor one literally two miles down the road from where I lived. Maybe this winter when it is raining I might go in there.

I like the soundtrack for that first video. The second video has some ridiculously retarded good riding – actually the first one does too with that flying out to flair and then landing in a spinny manually stuff. And in the third video I am always impressed when someone can ride on a rail with both tires…even riding on a train track is ridiculous…I’ve tried it and can go like 5 feet but that is not the same as going up a hand rail by hopping onto it…And you know what I just don’t fricken get is how the hell everyone is able to take drops from like 15 feet to flat without getting hurt? I can do about five feet and it hurts and if I screw up and put too much weight forward I am going to hurt my hands…

The park/street stuff is about third on the priority list, dirt used to be first, but now it is racing…I just want to go really fast and really far…I would almost KILL someone to go jump the jumps here but you have to be invited or something as they are rather large but they let you learn them by putting a little bridge in between the jumps so when you first try it you can come up short and then gradually as you get more comfortable jumping 30-40 feet you don't need them anymore...need to do this before I die I think...or at least die in the process.

rick! check my new ride...

Frame- Subrosa Pandora 20.75 TT black
forks- S&M pitch fork XLT
Bars- Animal Four Piece (came originally with S&M slam bars, but 2-piece ain't my style, ya dig?)
stem- S&M redneck
cranks- Fit
Sprocket- Fit
Chain- KMC
Pedals- Primo
Pegs- Kink Lite x 4
Seat- Primo
Post- Primo
seat clamp- animal
front wheel- Primo N4 (brand new) laced to primo balance rim. Fit FAF folding tire
Rear wheel Primo Mix LHD 8T driver (brand new) laced to odyssey 7KA rim . Revenge folding Tire.
Total weight: 23lbs

I found it used on craiglist, this bike is dialed in and has already proven it can take a beating and still ride really smooth. I decided, after reading your post, I also want to go fast and far, though I'll have to drive fast and far to find a place where I can do this. For the meantime, I'll just have to ease back into this hobby at the sk8parks.

Very nice. I see you are still a phan of riding brakeless. Damnit Beeeph all that time you were here and what we only went riding once? I should have went to the parks with you when you were around as I could have learned a lot from you as my park riding skills are pretty much isolated to 180s and manuals. I still haven't hit up the steep dirt jumps yet either - need to do that before I die or I will not be able to r.i.p...

How heavy/light is that bike?

Pretty much sucked...I snapped the chain and then slammed my knee into the bars but my stupid knee pads slid down my leg and didn't protect them. I have bought a new chain every time I change my gear since I started riding again and have made sure that the chains I get are strong...This one was supposed to handle 2866 ft/lbs but it just pulled apart...sucks...i don't knowa whata I'ma gunna doa...maybe i go back to Italia

Knee is better...

Post by Bill Drayton Jr. »

turned out to be not that bad and was able to ride today. Got a new chain that is ok, and new pads that cover higher on the knee...big race is this Sunday...Heh, the plan is to do better than last time which I am more than physically capable of doing as I am a lot better and faster now BUT can I put it all together when I have to is the question. The only physical issue, other than minor injuries, is having to wait for a long time just standing around in between motos. It's like you wait forever and then you have to do an all out sprint. I am going to warm up differently this time and hopefully that will get me to be like I am after I have fully warmed up. I'm actually not going to try as hard this time too because I think I was making it more difficult than it actually was...anyway...

Pulled it off!

Post by Bill Drayton Jr. »

It was difficult to sleep the night before but I went to bed early and woke up early but just rested for a while. At 8:30am I had a bowl of muselix for breakfast and then loaded my stuff. The drive down to the race I started getting ridiculously jacked up and got the feeling that I was going to do well.

Practice was a bit rough, I couldn't even get out of the gate with anyone as there were just fast people everywhere. My gate isn't that good anyway though so. I was bumping into people right off the line but the track felt good so I was ok.

[ insert about 1.5 hour wait ]

The first round was ridiculous, the best lap I have ever had and I ended up winning by nearly a straight away. I got out of the gate before any one else and stayed there. I knew going into the third turn that the other riders were way back but I just didn't feel like shutting down so I floored it all the way to the end. Since I made it first round I didn't have to race in the second round

[ insert about 1.5 hour wait ]

The second round runs without me while I wait in the sun.

[insert about 2 hour wait here]

I tried to eat some food but could only get down a banana. I was a bit out of it from sitting in the sun so long and not eating but my warm up worked pretty good and I felt ok but I was no where near the same as when I first came down. I was last out of the gate and got a bit behind but bunched up with the rider to my left and right over the first obstacle - I actually don't remember what happened after that until I got to the first corner and I was in second with someone right to the left of me. I cut low and capitalized on my power and passed the other rider pretty easy and that was it. I didn't even try and go as fast as I could have and just had fun being out in first jumping stuff because I had a big enough lead instead of manualling to speed up.

So...leading up to this state championship final I had to race in three other state championship qualifying races. The last race before the final I raced on vicodin and ibuprofen because I was hurt pretty bad from a previous crash so I got last there. The others I got first. In the end I tied for second place but since I won the final I ended up with the #2 plate so have to be happy about that. Anyway there were only 12 Washington riders in my age class but leading up to it I had to race younger riders and some out of state riders as well so...not bad I guess...What I am really happy about is that I didn't get hurt...Now I am invited to race in this Race of Champions series in Oklahoma...with all the other state champions...whoa...

Pretty much sure that I won't go now but you never know. I basically just need to get more race experience - particularly the contact part of it.

There is a really fine line between being a dirty rider and just a regular rider. The more riders on the track the more chance of contact. Running into someone on purpose in a turn where you send them flying over the berm is totally fine. Cutting someone off so that their front tire gets clipped by your rear tire is fine and if they crash from it then that's their problem. Using your hips to hit the ends of their handlebars so they come off the ground and get sideways is fine because they should have seen it coming. Elbowing someone anywhere is pretty much the standard thing or doing combinations where you elbow someone and push them off the track or use your shoulders or whatever. T-boning someone is usually a bad thing because usually it is obvious that it is pretty deliberate and both riders usually go down from it but sometimes it is worth it to make sure the other rider doesn't win even if it costs you the win because of the way the points work...anyway this is the reality of racing but "contact is discouraged."

There is another race this weekend for anyone over 30...it's crazy I don't plan on racing it but if I did I would just try and survive. I did one race and a guy ran into me in a turn and then the rear axle went through the sidewall of my front tire AND through my inner tube. I flipped over the handlebars and went down. Fortunately I was not hurt in any way. There was a similar group of older guys that raced this weekend and one went down and then a few others, one guy got carried off on a stretcher because he had a badly broken leg. One of the earlier 30 something races 7 of the 8 riders went down before the first turn...I don't really trust these guys because most of them a are really sketchy and the others that are really good are really competitive so that means contact time. And since everyone is so big being over 30 years old it gets ridiculous...Here is an example of a race I totally didn't want to do:

I know all these guys...one of them ended up breaking his collarbone or something and a couple others were hurt for a couple weeks...It probably doesn't look like they are going that fast but believe me if you saw it in person it was bad.

Someone posted a crash video from the race last weekend...the first crash with the big riders is the one where a guy broke his leg but you can't really make him out from the video. 6 of the 8 riders went down in that moto though...

I'm on YouTube!

Post by Bill Drayton Jr. »

Index to 6:38 to see me - I'm in black. My class is 36-40 Intermediate. When you first start racing you start out as Novice and then turn Intermediate after 10 wins, then 25 wins later you are an Expert. I raced one race as a Novice and then classed up to Intermediate since I wasn't a total Novice. I have 5 wins as an intermediate. I have raced a total of 10 races since I started which is a pretty low number.

Anyway...this race was pretty big being a final and all and like I said earlier my first round was way better than this one - wish I could see the video for that because by the time they got to the last turn I was over the finish line. I could have jumped the triple first round but not during the main...I blame the damn sun and not eating for so long...

Hurt in practice...again...for the second time...

Post by Bill Drayton Jr. »

Standard thing...was doing a jump I had done a million times and I don't know what happened that made me crash. Basically was going really fast, got out of control and had to eject. I landed on my feet but hit the ground so hard that my right heel got bruised. My right knee is fucked. I have never had an injury like this before and I am hoping it is just a sprain. What sounds like the problem is that I screwed up my lateral collateral ligament which is a bit scary...I can't walk. sucks.

INDOOR RACING VIDEO!!!!

Post by Bill Drayton Jr. »

Indoor tracks are smaller, slower, and shorter than outdoor but tend to be a bit more technical because of how tight everything is. Passing is really difficult because there isn't any room so the likelihood of a collision is much higher than outdoor racing. If you are fast and strong out of the gate and get to the first corner first you basically have the race won unless your endurance really sucks considering an indoor race here is only about 25 seconds where as outdoor is about 35 seconds and you pedal more.
